ASTF were appointed as landscape sub-consultants to GHM Design, architects and masterplanners.
Our role was to analyse the masterplan and fully understand the design principles in order to develop
a landscape concept for the entire project which was unique, yet entirely appropriate for its desert environment.
The landscape concept had to encompass a unifying theme but also permit variation within each development phase or ‘village’ giving it an identifiably distinct character. One of the major design constraints on the site was the limited supply
of irrigation water which helped shape the landscape concept and the planting vocabulary outlined in the landscape concept document produced for approval by the Abu Dhabi‘s Urban Planning Council and the Parks and Recreation Facilities Division.
Our work involved the design of over fifty sample areas at 1/500 which included all the key infrastructure areas of perimeter roads, boulevards, avenues and residential streets, key juctions and roundabouts as well major parks, urban squares, residential pocket parks as well as the design of village centres and contexts for schools, sports centres and the central mosque. ASTF in conjunction with The Terrafirma Consultancy were involved in the detailed design of the Commercial Centre phase comprising one sixth of the development whilst our scope of work included hard and soft landscape with sub-consultants for irrigation design, external lighting, wayfinding and signage and water features.
